Forgiveness: Does Repentance Come First?

August 23, 2026

About this episode

What does biblical forgiveness actually require—and where does repentance fit?

In this episode of The Rooted Way, we lay the groundwork for a deeper conversation about forgiveness by examining what Scripture means when it commands Christians to forgive.

We work through passages such as Mark 11:25, Luke 17:3–4, Matthew 6, Ephesians 4, Colossians 3, and Matthew 18 as we explore the relationship between forgiveness, repentance, reconciliation, accountability, and restored trust.

We also address some common misconceptions—such as the idea that forgiveness means forgetting what happened, removing consequences, immediately restoring trust, or pretending an offense was never serious.

This episode is intended to establish the biblical categories and key passages that set the stage for our upcoming panel discussion on the question: Does repentance come before forgiveness?
